Mustad Red Slow Death Hooks - The Pro's Secret
A Perspective on Perfection
by Gary Parsons

In the mid-90s a close group of walleye pros were generating tremendous results with a new technique called slow death. Incredible action was being added to live-bait presentations by bending hooks in a certain fashion. I knew it was something special, but because I couldn't master the precise hook bend, I was getting really inconsistent results. Working with the Mustad product development team, Keith and I spend countless hours testing hook bends until we perfected a hook design that anybody could rig effectively.

Not only do I use these hooks for trolling, but here's one other way make them work
really well. Tie the hook on a leader approx. 12" long. Then hook the leader to a
snap swivel that has a (your choice of amount) weight just above the swivel. I use
split shot of different weights depending on the depth. Now here's the trick.
Practice raising your pole so that the worm starts twisting like it is designed to
do. Go to the bottom. Raise worm 12"-15" inches off the bottom. Then raise your
pole slowly to make the worm twist, and then quickly drop your pole down to
original position and get ready for the fight. Using this method it not only
twists the bait on the way up but allows it to "flutter" on the way down. Try this
and you will be amazed at how many fish will hit this when nothing else seems to be
working. But don't tell your friends about this until they finally torture your
secret out of you. I had one guy tell me I'd have to swim back to the dock unless I
let him in on my "secret". Great fishing to all.

I have never used them but I ran into a guy that was using them and he was
doing pretty well with them. He had them tied onto a leader about 3 feet
long and one red bead in front of the hook and he used 1/2 of a crawler.
Pulling them behind a bottom bouncer. So my next trip I am gonna have them
in my tackle box.
